In this very brief letter I just want to touch on some of the issues to do with ‘gay marriage’.
The first thing I want to say is that if someone is reading this who has a homosexual orientation, I don’t want them to feel that they are unwanted, or unloved by me or ‘the Church’; I want them to know that they can come to Paul or me and talk.
On the other hand I don’t want to ‘fudge out’ on the issue. Whilst it is often argued that the Bible condemns promiscuous homosexual sex but not faithful monogamous homosexual relationships, in Genesis 2, we have the pattern of the husband and wife becoming one and in Romans 1 homosexual sex seems to be characteristic of rejection of and by God.
Homosexual sex is not the sin of sins, nor is it the only sexual sin. There are many different sins and of course they are all wrong, but by coming in repentance to God and trusting in his Son Jesus as Saviour we receive the gift of forgiveness and a new start. Ideally in church we also find loving fellowship to encourage us to continue following Jesus as Lord.
So, yes, I believe homosexual sin is wrong, but should I impose my beliefs and morality on society at large? It almost seems fair to answer ‘no’, but to ignore what I understand is God’s revealed will for relationships is going to have a harmful effect on the whole of society.
To finish up: to provide homosexual couples the economic protection afforded to heterosexual couples I think is just and fair. To redefine marriage to include homosexual couples is to knock out a foundational building block of society and to take a step away from God.
Love in Christ,
